Custom Seed Cabinet

Take a look at this!

This beautiful, custom built seed cabinet was donated by Angela Camarillo and Bob Remington, famous local artists of wood.
Country Woods Designs.com

This was built to fit on the book shelves of the Westcliffe Public Library, our Seed Library's new home.

Another individual paid for the materials and Angela and Bob donated their time and skill.  Again, people coming together sure makes things happen!

Here's What We Did With It...

Westcliffe, Colorado - The Wet Mountain Valley

Picture
We are small mountain town full of avid, passionate gardeners who face daily the wild challenges of trying to grow food in the mountains.
What is it?
A Seed Library is a place for you to check seed out for free, grow it out in your garden, and return twice as much seed as you took - or any amount.  In doing so the seed will immediately begin to adapt to the environment - which is wild and gnarly here in the mountains.
Locally grown, adapted seed is particularly important to the extremes of the mountain climate.
Saving Seed is a vital step toward sustainability, food security and is a missing link in today's gardening.  Let's learn to save seed again.
A Seed Library will help to build bio-diversity for our local food supply, as well as educate gardeners on how to save true seed.
Growing healthy, nutritious, high altitude grown food improves the lives of the community and brings people together.  Saving seed is a time honored tradition that we can all share - we know we have the right to save seed!

A Seed Library is a positive response to the world seed situation.  To learn more read these amazing articles:

Education and Regionally Adapted Seed - 2 main goals - we want to do this right - we are on the quest to share seed and teach gardeners how to return true seed, thereby adapting it to our extreme region.  Adapted seed will work better for all of our gardens in the high country.

Westcliffe Rocks!!!  Together, and starting with one person, 7 individuals, Sustainable Ways and The High Altitude Gardening Club of Westcliffe made going to Seed School happen.  As a result of that effort and with the help of 22 solid volunteers and our hosts at the West Custer County Library there will be a Seed Library in Westcliffe.
Thank you Westcliffe!!!
